These gentle birds are found in shallow wet land areas where their primary source of crustaceans and invertebrates can be located. Generally, they are black and white, but achieve the rust color on their necks during nesting season. Mostly found on the western half of the U.S., and along the coast up to Virginia on the east coast. Hearty species, the chicks are ready to leave the nest within 24 hours and evade predators by running, swimming, or diving. The etching presents a life size Avocet (female) in full breeding plumage. It was created on 5 copper plates which imbues it with a rich color pallet. After printing each etching is meticulously hand-colored with transparent watercolors.
"American Avocet"
Technical Art Information:
Image size: 27” x 21”
This etching is hand-made on 5 large copper plates, each plate containing different colors. In addition to the Rives BFK rag paper used for the etching, the inks and paints employed to create the etching are of the highest quality. To have all the plates register (the images lining up when hand printing) is a technical task of engineering proficiency. Two weeks after the ink dries, another 2-3 hours of hand-coloring is required to finish the piece. Because of all the hand work involved, no two pieces are exactly the same. The etching has a 2” border of paper around the image with a beautiful, deckled edge.
Framing:
Archival framing using supreme materials. The wood moulding is custom made with a pewter-champagne finish. The mat is museum rag – 8 ply, and the mounting mat is an archival neutral grey. The etching is floated to display an elegant, deckled edge of the beautiful rag paper that the etching is printed on. The glass is high quality museum glass to greatly reduce glare and protect the art from fading. The back is sealed with a mounting wire attached and ready to hang.
