Now considered to be extinct; the Ivory Billed Woodpecker was once the largest woodpecker in North America (second largest in the world). Several years ago, there were rumors of a sighting in Arkansas but nothing was confirmed. I had always wanted to do an etching of this bird, so I made a trip to the Field Museum in Chicago where I was able to study several (deceased) specimens. The etching process complements the rich, cool black feathers of these Ivory-bills. A stunning 3 plate hand-colored etching with hand-painting created with transparent watercolors make this a spectacular piece of art. These life sized birds against this dramatic backdrop make a powerful image.

Technical Art Information:
Image Size: 24” x 35”
This etching is hand-made on 4 large copper plates, each plate containing different colors. In addition to the Arches rag paper used for the etching, the inks and paints employed to create the etching are of the highest quality. Each etching in the edition requires over 2 hours of consistent labor to print. Two weeks after the ink dries, several hours are required to finish the piece. Because of all the hand work involved, no two pieces are exactly the same. The etching has a 2” border of paper around the image with a beautiful, deckled edge. The edition is nearly sold out.
Framing:
Archival framing using supreme materials. The wood moulding is custom made with a pewter-champagne finish. The mat is museum rag – 8 ply, and the mounting mat is an archival neutral grey. The etching is floated to display an elegant, deckled edge of the beautiful rag paper that the etching is printed on. The glass is high quality museum glass to greatly reduce glare and protect the art from fading. The back is sealed with a mounting wire attached and ready to hang.
