This magnificent raptor has a very healthy population in Florida and in many parts of the United States. I wanted to show the underside of its body so that the viewer can see the amazing feather patterns and colors, one of the most colorful hawks in the U.S. It is also the most vocal hawk in North America, so if you happen to hear a hawk in an area where they reside, it is a good chance it is a Red-shouldered. Depicted life size, it is a one of my more challenging etchings to print: 5 plates with 17 colors of inks. Not only is the printing intense, the hand-coloring with transparent watercolors is also extreme.
"Red-shouldered Hawk"
Technical Art Information:
Image Size: 24” x 34”
This etching is hand-made on 5 large copper plates with over 16 different ink colors. In addition to the Arches rag paper used for the etching, the inks and paints employed to create the etching are of the highest quality. Each etching in the edition requires over 2 hours of consistent labor to print. Two weeks after the ink dries, several hours are required to finish the piece. Because of all the hand work involved, no two pieces are exactly the same. The etching has a 2” border of paper around the image with a beautiful, deckled edge.
Framing:
Archival framing using supreme materials. The wood moulding is custom made with a pewter-champagne finish. The mat is museum rag – 8 ply, and the mounting mat is an archival neutral grey. The etching is floated to display an elegant, deckled edge of the beautiful rag paper that the etching is printed on. The glass is high quality museum glass to greatly reduce glare and protect the art from fading. The back is sealed with a mounting wire attached and ready to hang.
